To film or just to intervene?
To capture or to interrupt some potential historical scene?
To risk your reputation in a tricky situation
Simply for the ignominy
Of being broadcast on TV
In one of those hideous ‘real-life’ documentaries
To be passed unedited down through the centuries.
Unedited records so transparent
As to leave a legacy of permanent embarrassment…
Have we shifted to a place where fame is all that matters
Irrespective of the souls and spirits this way shattered
With video evidence flooding the ether,
The pernicious virus of a social fever:
The lingering mark of a generation
That readily films in all situations,
Often with little else in mind
Than the audience they might hope to find,
Testament to Five short Minutes of Fame,
Replaying the incident again and again
Pleasing audiences immensely,
Feeding a social media frenzy,
Talking about it in complicit tones
While distributing via mobile phones
A moment in history of little significance
Building a tide of cognitive dissonance,
Secret feelings of guilty pleasure
A really very private measure
Of just how desperate folk can be
As to constantly court such ignominy,
Prompting a little-asked point of review;
What if what you do was done unto you?
This cause-effect of disrespect
Billboarding your face
All over the place,
All in the name of underwriting
Something, frankly, just not that exciting…
