Hokey-Cokey*

It seems the government’s calling our bluff
With all this In-Out Brexit stuff
Causing fissures across the nation
By the very nature of vacillation-
Everyone in the media now vocal to the point of embarrassment
Prompting general awareness of boundaries to political harassment…
Freedom of speech like a whale on the beach:
Too much, too soon, and potentially marooned
As the rhetoric of victory, of choice and of dignity
Is gradually fraying in the winds of change
-So little time to rearrange,
So little time to galvanise,
To shape new truths from the rhetoric and lies,
Although, to be fair, it’s not hard to see
Opposition has no credibility…
‘Principles’ having got in the way
Of what they really needed to say
-Stuff they wanted to espouse
Lost to the ether, having failed to arouse
Sufficient faith in common sense
Over leadership of one elected gent
Who spoke rather too much from his heart
And in his turn, slowly picked apart
Most of the reasons he would’ve been good
To lead the Nation out of the woods,
The British Public being lemmings at heart
Needing a leader who’s set apart:
One with a visible sense of command
To underpin his rhetorical stand.
One with the will and the means to succeed
-Which seems to be what this Nation needs.
But it’s never the case that one size fits all
With too many politicians set to appal,
Completely naive in their egocentrism:
The self-righteous tokenism
That feeds a sense of self-importance
Via well-rehearsed, solo, theatrical performance.
But the times have long been changin’,²
Silent, with nobody claimin’
Direct responsibility
For human ingenuity-
The stuff of practical common sense
That feeds capacity for recompense;
The simple wit to recognise
When Opportunity is a poor disguise
For self-serving publicity
That’s lacking authenticity.
Whatever politicians believe of constituents
They’d do well to acknowledge the sentiment
That many- most?-folk will never trust
Self-motivated power lust,
As clear as clear as the nose on your face,
An odds-on source of your own disgrace.
If you want us to put an X in your box,
You’ve gotta do more than just pull up your socks…

* -an appropriately childish metaphor for the Brexitisation¹  of the UK?

¹ ‘Brexitisation‘?! -I claim this word as my own as of 19th April 2017…

²   https://youtu.be/e7qQ6_RV4VQ – respect due to Bob Dylan, from long before I was old enough to understand…
