We Are What We Learn*

Age
Is a mark of history.
No messing and no mystery.
Concession to longevity
In partnership with levity.
The been-there/seen-it/ done-it thing
A strictly private way of thinking
Caught between a private grief
That only those who shared believe
And modern reinterpretation
In the name of Education:
Hearing what you’ve learned before
Recanted academically
As though the passage of the years
Entitles theft of history.

*A personal mantra tattooed on my soul- in respect of the sometimes extraordinary judgements we pass quite unwittingly on people who think differently to ourselves for any number of reasons.

The reference to age is a consequence of hearing so many personal accounts of the erosion of self-worth over time in a society that so highly prioritises youth over experience.
