Dawn Chorus

Hark! The bloomin’ seagulls sing
Just as every day is dawning,
From the nearby rooftops calling
A song, to some, that sounds appalling…
Laughing like old mates returned,
Telling tales of all they’ve learned
Winging their way from every aspect,
Sharing that raucous dialect.
Calling out for recognition,
Jostling eagerly for position,
Bustling wings and playful banter
Ably supporting a sonorous cantor,
Laughing at the tops of their voices
Limiting sleep-deprived human choices,
Call-response, the way it goes
As any weary neighbour knows…
This, a seasonal daily reminder
That living by the seaside
Couldn’t be finer!
