Academisation.¹
The deconstruction of State education
By the very folk at the helm of the nation.
Most of whom will not have partaken,
Which weakens their argument, if I’m not much mistaken…
Those whose parents paid their fees
While peers² elsewhere got schooled for free,
Evident right from Spell-Check’s rejection
Of the moniker given to their novel conception
Of schools for all the ordinary kids
Run by business folk, enthusiastic but tepid,
Having little sense of particular subtleties
Required when dealing with mummies and daddies,
Each and every one entitled
To expect the best of their lassies and laddies.
This, the point where logic fails
As Blue politicians repeatedly regale
The benefits of selling off
Education for All, not just the toffs,
Missing the bloomin’ ob-vee-us
That what suits them may not suit us;
That making a literal interpretation
Of National Standards for education
More about outcomes than developing skill
Seems much less likely to fulfil
The hopes and drives and aspirations
Of young people across the nation
Forgetting, or by wilful omission,
The critically important practical position
That one-size-fits-all is a damning ambition,
A foolish, myopic, reductionist treatise
Guaranteed to facilitate incumbent demise
Of skills and capabilities
Not gradable with A-to-Cs,
Forgetting that ‘normal distribution’
Expresses the impact of any collusion:
Squeezing everyone into the bulge
In order simply to indulge
Politicians’ myopic intentions
To propagate notions of student retention,
Concealing the auspice of State control
By keeping young people off the dole…
