Football versus Famine:
An inauspicious competition,
One roaring with victory
The other, silent with contrition.
While half the world has front-row seats
To both of these events,
Mourning from the sofa
Is insufficient recompense.
The irony of anger
As the goalie gets his way,
The crowds roaring obscenity
Demand opponents pay
And silent with dignity
Somewhere else across the planet
Are struggling souls in crisis
All too easy to forget.
The things we take for granted
Unnoticed, ubiquitous:
Most of what we need, we buy
-Isn’t that just obvious?
Food, shelter, clothing, healthcare
Look on line and find them there-
Turn the tap or flick a switch,
No need to dredge a dusty ditch
Or walk for miles with plastic barrels
While wearing pristine team apparel.
